Sci-Fi Spring Festival Gala (科幻春晩) is an online Spring Festival sci-fi event organized by the Beijing-based sci-fi agency Future Affairs Administration (未来事務管理局) since 2015. The event features podcast updates, reader-participation voting sessions, red envelope (hongbao) giveaways, and, most notably, daily releases of sci-fi short stories.
Each year, around ten stories are written based on a different theme, and all of them are quite sophisticated (at least, that’s my impression from skimming them through machine translation). This year’s participating authors include Han Song, whose novel Infinite Hospital recently began its Japanese translation; Yang Ping, who has participated for ten consecutive years; and other renowned authors such as Jiang Bo, Zhou Wen, and Su Guanwen. New participants this year include Li Xia and Cheng Jingbo, both regulars of sci-fi literary awards, and Tan Que, who rose to prominence from the ranks of readers. We have Canadian authors Jiang Ai and Derek Künsken, Samantha Murray, and myself from abroad. This year, the event is also planned to be shared by media outlets such as Xinhua News Agency, China Daily, China.org.cn, Science Popularization Times, and Literature Newspaper.
The four stories I have contributed so far—“Like a Migratory Bird,” “Fluttering Wings to Say Hello,” “At the End of the Fall,” and “Grandmother’s Dragon”—were included in my collection Like a Migratory Birds, published last year by Tokyo Sogensha. As I noted in the commentary for the collection, all of these stories are sci-fi set in space. Since the Spring Festival is when many people return to their hometowns, I aim to write stories that resonate with human connections.
This year’s story is also set in space. I expect it will be published domestically at some point, so please look forward to it!
